How to always be ready for learning or Classes of Tasks

How much time do you spend on public transportation, queueing? For busy learners every minute counts. That´s why it is important to be aware of potential learning situation and to always be ready. How? Let´s see …

ClassesOfTasks

Are you ready for the next learning session?

Last time I did a rather detailed planning of my tasks. I was breaking down every deliverable into small tasks that are easy to estimate and to handle. At the end of my planning session I then had one Trello list for every deliverable containing the related tasks. Which seamed pretty good at the start … still after a while I found it somehow hard to identify what I can do right now in various situations.

The Classes

Maybe you know the concept used in GTD (Getting Things Done) or from the Class of Service used in Kanban? Certain tasks can only be performed in specific situations and different types of task need special environments.

This applies also to learning:

  • While it is actually possible to do coding on the bus
it is much easier to read on the bus.
  • I can read a long book chapter on my couch
but actually I prefer to do it in the gym on the treadmill.
  • It is pretty annoying to write while eating
but it is easy to watch a video tutorial while having lunch.

I tried to improve this visibility first by adding tags … but that was not good enough. I ended up with having one list per class of task:

  • checking
  • watching
  • easy reading
  • challenging reading
  • doing

I like that arrangement because I can always choose a tasks matching my current environment.

What types of tasks do you usually need to do for your assignments?

The Situations

Next we need to analyse the situations that we actually already use for learning and finding new situations that we could use in the future:

  • public transportation / car
  • under the shower
  • queueing in the supermarket
  • walking
  • gym
  • housekeeping
  • getting dressed

What situations are you currently already using for learning?
Can you think of other situations that you could use in the future?

The Matching

Maybe we are meanwhile inspired enough to try a lot of new ideas. If not we could now create a matrix: situations on the x-achsis and classes on the y-achsis and then we can create more ideas for every cell …

The Conclusion

  • Identify the different Classes Of Tasks and their necessary environment
  • Brainstorm learning situations
  • Match classes with situations
  • Make sure to always have one task for every class ready
  • … start 🙂
