What is the Best Size for Your Kanban Backlog?

In his book about Kanban, David J. Anderson gives us some hints on the ideal backlog size.

The ideal Kanban Backlog Size

Three month of delivery throughput (three month worth of work

It depends on market and domains:

  • high volatility > one month worth of items
  • low volatility > up to one year of items

Example:

  • velocity: 20 user stories / month
  • volatility: some but not excessive
  • backlog size: 3 months = 60 items
