What Successful Teams do

This is an interesting take away from the 2012 HBR article The Discipline of Teams by Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith

How Successful Teams Behave

The article states that there is no recipe for building a successful team but these approaches can be observed:

  • Establish urgency, demanding performance standards, and direction

  • Select members for skill and skill potential, not personality

  • Pay particular attention to first meetings and actions

  • Set some clear rules of behavior

  • Set and seize upon a few immediate performance-oriented tasks and goals

  • Challenge the group regularly with fresh facts and information

  • Spend lots of time together

  • Exploit the power of positive feedback, recognition, and reward
